Reading & Phonics

As you will be aware at Freehold, we understand how important it is that children are able to read confidently and take pleasure from reading a variety of books. We have a fantastic library which is filled with exciting books that the children are able to take home. Each class has a class author and poet so they are able to read their books and poems throughout the year. We have recently set up a new home reading system and now all of our children are able to access books on the internet through bugclub.

All children from Nursery to Year 2 have phonics lessons following the Letters and sounds guidance. Children take part in daily, discreet sessions where the 4 part lesson is completely ineractive. They learn through revisiting, learning, practising and applying what they know, using their phonics skills.

Staff plan interactive sessions using a range or resources such as phonics bug, phonics play and the RWinc scheme.

Children are assessed regularly and interventions are set up for any children needing extra support to acheive their potential.

2015 results

Last Year, in year 1, 81% of our children met the standard to pass the compulsory phonics test.

Well done Year 1!!!

We will be holding a parents meeting at the beginning of the Spring term to discuss Phonics and the test that your child will be taking.

If you would like any more information regarding phonics please contact the main office to make an appointment with Mrs Flood who would be happy to help.
